Visions of heaven: Celestial and Divine

Music at Matariki with a heavenly theme, sung by City Choir Dunedin. This concert highlights the versatility of the mighty St Paul’s cathedral organ both in choral accompaniment and as a solo instrument. Organist Jeremy Woodside will accompany the choir, conducted by David Burchell and Mark Anderson. It being Matariki, we explore a heavenly theme, and the programme features two large-scale anthems depicting visions of a Christian heaven by Edward Bairstow and Edgar Bainton; both have a prominent role for the organ. These are complemented by three contemporary pieces inspired by the stars, by Eriks Esenvalds and NZ composers Chris Artley and David Hamilton, plus Joseph Haydn’s celebration of celestial creation ‘The heavens are telling the glory of God’. In contrast to the organ, ‘Stars’ by Esenvalds is sung against the ethereal tones of tuned wine-glasses. The choral items will be interspersed with organ solo pieces on heavenly themes.

Tickets from Eventfinda and Beggs MusicWorks: $30 (students $10; children free). Limited seating –book early!
